Skills for Garments

Punjab Skills Development Fund (PSDF) launched Skills for Garments scheme in April 2014. Under the scheme, 9000 men and women from seven districts of Punjab (Lahore, Gujranwala, Shiekhupura, Faisalabad, Chiniot, Sargodha, Narowal) were being trained in various trades relevant to garments sector. To substantiate the industry’s demand Punjab Skills Development Fund organized a workshop to assess the skills paucities prevalent in the apparel industry specifically at workers and middle management level. During the workshop, representatives from renowned industrial units divulged the particular areas hailing demand for the skilled manpower. Operating on the findings from skills needs assessment session, PSDF designed the scheme to train individuals in more than 25 trades pertinent to the garments industry. The Fund awarded contracts to 13 Training Service Providers; the array was comprised of notable industrial units and training institutions. Specific Objectives of the Scheme were:

1.   Enabling structured opportunities of industrial need-based trainings in order to improve livelihood prospects for the poor and

vulnerable communities.

2.  Upscaling the skills set within the garments sector to escalate overall productivity of the apparel industry.

3.  Encouraging industry’s participation for the delivery of quality vocational trainings.
